Classroom
John Stanford International School (JSIS) serves grades K-5. Each grade has an immersion component, meaning that half of the program is conducted completely in another language: Spanish or Japanese.
Each grade has a Spanish immersion class and a Japanese immersion class. Starting in the fall of 2009, JSIS will add another Japanese immersion class. As this "bubble" class advances, another Japanese immersion class will be added to the respective grade.
Immersion teachers are usually native speakers of immersion languages. In addition, every immersion classroom is staffed by a certificated Instructional Assistant (IA), lowering the student-teacher ratio to 14:1. IA salaries are paid for through grants and fund-raising. Classroom teachers loop with the students for two years.
Every class at JSIS has one or two parents who volunteer to be “Room Reps” for their class. Room Reps facilitate classroom communication between parents, teachers, staff, the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), and the larger JSIS community through weekly class emails and personal communication.
