Samba in the Fifth Grade
The fifth graders have just finished their unit on Brazilian samba! The samba instruments and
instrumental parts were purchased using funds from the PTSA.They learned to play four types of
instruments, and each student then chose two instruments on which to specialize, practicing the
parts we learned as a class, and composing their own parts for their instruments. The Spanish fifth
grade was able to record themselves playing the traditional parts and the ones they composed. You
can hear the instruments come in at the beginning of each section, divided by a call and response
pattern. Listen for the bass drums (surdo), two-tone bells (agogo), high hand drums (tamborim),
and shakers (ganza).
