Building Leadership Team (BLT) Parent Reps Needed for '08-'09
The JSIS Building Leadership Team is comprised of teachers, the principal and parents. Together, we discuss and resolve
issues, oversee the development of the academic achievement improvement plan, oversee the facilitation and development
of the school budget and champion the vision and mission of the school.
Parent terms are 2-years and they represent the following groups: K/1, 2/3, 4/5, Families at-large, and ESL families.
For this coming school year, we are looking for a new K/1 representative and a new ESL Family representative
to replace two parents who have finished serving their second years. What we're looking for are parents/guardians who
are passionate about and supportive of our school and its mission. The 2-year time commitment involves meeting on
Friday mornings from 8:15 - 9:00 once-a-month in the fall, twice-a-month in the winter (to work on the budget), and
then once-a-month in the spring.
the time, are collaborative, and would like to serve the school in this capacity, please e-mail me at
kearamaki@seattleschools.org. Include in your e-mail why you are
interested in participating and what you believe you could offer this leadership group. If there is more than one
person who applies for either of the positions, candidates will be voted on by their constituents. The deadline to
apply is Wednesday, May 21, 2008. If you have any questions, please drop by and visit or e-mail me.
PTSA Looking for New Leaders
JSIS is blessed with the most incredible, positive, hard-working and supportive PTSA. The success of our school and the
quality of our program is attributed in great part to our PTSA. I am very thankful for Adriana Alfaro-Zierten's
leadership this past year as president and to the PTSA board members who have given so much of their time and talent
to the students and staff. As a number of them are looking to pass the torch to a new group of parents, I encourage
you to consider sharing your leadership as a member of the PTSA board. The PTSA board and I work very closely together
to provide the students with the greatest educational experience, and I'd love to see some positive and collaborative
people join the team. If you are interested in being a part of the PTSA leadership or would like to learn more about it,
please go to our website and contact any of the PTSA nominating committee members.

Compassion Sighting at JSIS!
Supporting Friends in Financial Need - As many of you know, JSIS has a sister school in Puerto Vallarta,
Mexico. It's a school close to a large landfill, near a resort, and one that has very few resources compared to schools
in the U.S. Every year, we have a plant sale where all the proceeds benefit our sister school. This year, with generous
seed donations from Tilth Gardens, lots of "green thumb" work by our K/1 students, plant donations from families, hours
of volunteer time by our staff and parents, and all the JSIS families, friends and neighbors who came by and bought
something, we were able to raise $2400, all of which will be donated to our sister school! Thanks to everyone who
supported this compassionate effort!
* If you have a Compassion Sighting, please send it in to your teacher or to the office!

Annoucements & Important Reminders:
- Staff Appreciation Week - Thanks to PTSA and all the parents and students who contributed to what
is being hailed as the "greatest staff appreciation week ever"! Thanks for the beautiful flower arrangements!
Thanks for the cards! Thanks to the anonymous fifth grade donor who donated a morning of free lattes! And thanks
for the 5-days of gourmet lunches and desserts (which have resulted in a staff in desperate need of working out,
but we're not complaining)! We are so grateful for your support and encouragement. Thank you so much for your generosity.
- Update on Hiring a 4th Grade Teacher for '08-'09 Starting this week (to replace Mrs. O. who is headed
to John Muir Elementary this fall), our fourth grade position will be open to current Seattle Public Schools
employees only. During this phase of the hiring process, the district works with available teachers and principals
to make the best placements. Although we won't have the opportunity to interview candidates, Seattle has many great
teachers and we're hoping for a perfect (or near perfect) match! If you'd like to give input regarding selecting
a new 4th grade teacher, please feel free to e-mail Kelly. If no one in the district chooses our school, we
would then have the opportunity to interview outside candidates. I'll keep you posted on the process.
