 ACADEMIC:

Chess Club ~ ChessMates ~ $120/year ~ SIGN UP TODAY & GUARANTEE PLACEMENT!

  • $120 ~ A hugely popular activity (usually reaching capacity quickly, so be sure to inquire and/or register right away if interested), chess club requires more supervision than the standard two adults.  Therefore, this year we ask that the club run as a cooperative effort, with a volunteer sign-up sheet for rotating assistance.  Kindergarten spots are usually limited, and preference is typically given to 1st -5th graders. Our chess club is graciously run through Chess Mates Foundation. The Chess Mates programs focus on chess as a teaching tool; learning and playing chess helps children build future life and work skills. Chess Mates provides all teaching materials, chess equipment and a trained instructor.  Tournaments with other chess players from around the area are another exciting part of Chess Club. General Assistant Volunteers needed. Full and partial scholarships are available, but this class is an exception to the 100% off for all volunteers.  Historically, chess club is our most popular activity and fills up fast!  Volunteers will receive priority placement - click here to sign up!

GO Club ~ Seattle Go Center

  • $63  ~ The Seattle Go Center would like to invite us to play Go, a strategic board game that is played with white and black stones on a grid pattern.  The game is very popular in China, Japan, and Korea, where there are professional leagues for the game, and millions of serious players.  In the U.S., the Go scene is much smaller, but it is growing and diverse. Go is a game of skill; there is no element of chance.  Because it uses math and analysis in a fun way, it is a good choice for an after school program. Go can be handicapped, so that beginning players and slow learners have an even chance of winning against more competent players.  The handicapping system keeps the game fun for all, and it also allows us to track a player's progress in comparison to other players.  "The game (of go) rewards patience and balance over aggression and greed; the balance of influence and territory may shift many times during the course of a game. This shifting promotes a delicate combination of firm resolution and relaxed flexibility. Like the martial arts, Go teaches concentration, balance, and discipline." (Seattle Go Homepage). MAX 15 students.
